Mwanahawa & Jufusu

On an exceptionally hot afternoon I met Mwanahawa like this. She had traveled 15km with her one and a half year old son. She was hoping to have one of the TAS leaders go with her to see the doctor – her baby is sick – she fears with Malaria – and she is unable to afford treatment for him.

When I first met 23-year-old Mwanahawa I was struck by her infinite sadness. With a sick baby and worn out by traveling and waiting in the hot sun I thought I understood. Talking to her with the help of an interpreter I found out that there was so much more to it. When Mwanahawa was expecting her first baby, one and a half year old Yufusu, she and her husband were excited. When Yufusu was born with albinism life fell apart for Mwanahawa. Her husband was angry with her and left her. He refused to believe that Yufusu was his baby. It didn't make sense to him that he and Mwanahawa are both black, and that their son could be anything else.

Mwanahawa said she felt sad too but, loves her son and tries to do her best. The love she has for Yufusu shone through and, when, caught up with his antics – like pulling off her headdress, she smiled for a few rare moments despite her troubles.
